Israel tapped to lead battle against blood diamonds
The nations, organizations and companies participating in the international initiative known as the "Kimberley Process" aimed at stemming the flow of illicit rough diamonds, or blood diamonds, elected Israel on Tuesday to lead the process.
The decision was made during a major Kimberley Process summit taking place in Tel Aviv. Israel is part of the initiative as the Jewish state is a leader in the international diamond-cutting and processing industry. Other participants apparently felt that Israel's security expertise made it the best choice to combat the blood diamond phenomenon.
Blood diamonds are rough diamonds farmed by brutal rebel movements that make constant war on legitimate governments in Africa. Local slaves, many of them children, are often used to farm the diamonds. Many other children are outfitted and forced into war by the money the diamonds bring in.
