AUL

Dear Friend,

Sometimes, in the face of our ongoing work to prevent pro-abortion legislation from gaining a foothold in Congress, it is easy to forget how much progress we’ve made. AUL’s latest State Legislative Report, which you can download from our Web site, is an inspiring reminder that, just as the majority of the American people oppose abortion on demand, the majority of states continue to successfully pursue and implement a life-affirming legislative agenda.

As I told LifeNews.com, clearly, we are making progress at the state level -- law by law and state by state -- to protect and defend life. We are encouraged by the progress that has been made in 2009 and enthusiastically look forward to working with pro-life legislators to advance pro-life legislation and policies in 2010.

I also wanted to be sure you saw the op-ed published in the Washington Times on Monday that I wrote following our meeting at the White House. It outlines our ongoing concerns over health care reform: “The truth is that the health care packages under consideration do include abortion funding. Without a specific statutory amendment that includes an explicit ban on federal funding and coverage, we face health care reform that includes abortion.”

To demonstrate how the health care bills currently in Congress mandate abortion funding, we took a chart created by our legal team to the meeting. You can find “Understand the Abortion Mandate” on our Web site RealHealthCareRespectsLife.com. I encourage you to download the chart and send it to your family and friends so that they will understand why we must keep the pressure on Congress so that taxpayers will not be forced to fund the destruction of the unborn.

The news media has also been covering Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus’s new bill as a “compromise.” In fact, as our legal team has reported, it’s severely compromised. Read about the troubling elements of the bill in our legal team’s memo, which we’ve just posted to the AUL Blog.

Thank you for all your support during this extremely busy time as we work to show Congress and all Americans that “Real Health Care Respects Life”!

AUL and AULA in the News

Our meeting with the White House to bring your voice into the health care debate resulted in lots of media coverage. I was interviewed on Fox News on both Friday and Sunday, and AUL Staff Counsel Mary Harned was interviewed on CBN. FoxNews.com, the Washington Examiner, LifeSite, CBN.com’s Brody File, and LifeNews all covered the story as well. Then, on Monday, the Washington Times published my op-ed, “Is Abortion Health Care, or Is it Not?” You can view below other AUL media coverage from this past week:
