On The Docket

Saunders: Don't Fall for Kagan's 'Sleight of Hand'

William Saunders, AUL Senior Vice President of Legal Affairs, warned in a Human Events op-ed this week that U.S. senators should not let themselves be fooled by the verbal "sleight of hand" that Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan attempted when answering questions about her time as an adviser to President Clinton on partial-birth abortion.

The questions, Saunders writes, centered upon "Kagan’s attempt to lobby the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) to change its position statement on partial-birth abortion to reflect her preferred language as debate on the heinous practice heated up on Capitol Hill. ... There seems to be a clear difference between what Kagan told the Senate [about what transpired] and what may have actually taken place." Read more on the AUL Blog.

Louisiana Opts Out of Federal Abortion Mandate

AUL applauds Louisiana's decision to become the fourth state to opt out of the federal health care reform law's abortion-funding mandate. Gov. Bobby Jindal last week signed House Bill 1247, “The Abortion Insurance Opt-out Act," a bill based on a piece of model legislation crafted by Americans United for Life. The new law prohibits health insurers participating in the state-run health insurance exchange (scheduled to go into effect in 2014) from offering plans or policies that cover abortions. In the three short months since President Obama signed the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” into law, four states – Arizona, Mississippi, Tennessee, and now Louisiana – have acted to protect life and to ensure that taxpayer dollars are not used to fund abortions.
