FROM AMERICAN HERITAGE

Congress Comes Back: Heritage Action’s Strategy

Londa,

Next week, Congress will return to Washington after their six-week summer recess. Unfortunately, this means our national security, freedom and economic prosperity are once again in jeopardy as the Pelosi-led majority continue to push their liberal agenda. At Heritage Action, we plan to be busy.

Here are the issues we’re watching and how you can take action:

Repealing Obamacare: Representatives Signing the Discharge Petition

As you know, Discharge Petition #11 would force Nancy Pelosi to allow an up or down vote on a bill to repeal Obamacare. We have unified the Republican Party in their support of this petition and now our government relations team will be hard at work, pressuring all the Democrat Representatives that opposed Obamacare to sign the discharge petition. Members who tell their constituents they oppose Obamacare but then refuse to break with Nancy Pelosi need to feel the heat.

How You Can Help

Email or call your Representative and ask them to support repeal.

Spread the message: if members of Congress support repeal, they should put their money where their mouth is and sign the discharge petition.

New START: “Unilateral Disarmament”

On Thursday, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will vote on this dangerous treaty and as it stands now it is likely to be approved. At that point, the battle will move to the Senate floor.

How You Can Help

Call your Senators and tell them to oppose the treaty.

Send a letter to the editor of your local paper.

Get your friends and neighbors to do the same.

Upcoming: Taxes and Spending

Congress must also deal with the pending Obama tax hikes. This is likely to be the most important debate in Congress this year. Imposing growth-crushing tax increases is never the right thing to do. But in an economy that is struggling to create jobs and regain its footing, this is especially misguided, even for this Congress!

That legislative battle will be brutal – it will show which Members of Congress favor economic growth and which ones favor government growth. At the same time, Congress is likely to pass a bloated omnibus-spending bill. Of course, spending is the most challenging long-term problem facing the country.

During the next couple of weeks, our team at Heritage Action will tell you how you can be engaged in the fights to stop the Obama tax increases and return federal spending to responsible levels. As we engage in the fight to protect our shared conservative principles, we’ll keep you up to speed.

Thanks for working with us to keep America strong,
