FROM MOVE ON

Dear MoveOn member,

This election will determine the future of Social Security. Many politicians—Republicans and even some Democrats—are pushing deep benefit cuts, even though Social Security runs a huge surplus and cannot contribute one penny to the deficit.

Town Hall meetings are a great opportunity to find out where candidates stand on Social Security, and put pressure on those who want to cut benefits. By getting candidates on the record, we can make sure voters know who will stand up for Social Security, and who will cut benefits.

Your representative, Lynn Jenkins, is holding a public event in Garnett on Monday and we need a strong turnout to express how important protecting Social Security is to voters—can you come?

We're working with a big coalition of progressive groups to get candidates to sign a promise to protect Social Security, which states simply:

Social Security belongs to the people who have worked hard all their lives and contributed to it. Social Security is a promise that must not be broken. If you pay in, then you earn the right to benefits for yourself, your spouse and your dependent children when you retire, experience a severe disability, or die.

We need to strengthen Social Security, not cut it. That is why I oppose any cuts to Social Security benefits, including increasing the retirement age. I also oppose any effort to privatize Social Security, in whole or in part.

Your representative needs to know that her constituents support this promise and want them to sign. Can you show up on Monday and tell Rep. Jenkins that you want to see Congress protect Social Security and stop all benefit cuts—including raising the retirement age?

Thanks for all you do.
