Court paves way for enmity toward Christians

An official with Focus on the Family says Christians -- in light of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling -- must be prepared to have their faith challenged at the high school and college levels.

Last week the high court upheld the right of a public university to enforce an antidiscrimination policy against a student group affiliated with the Christian Legal Society. Justices said it was wrong for the Christian student group at the University of California's Hastings College of the Law to have members sign a statement of faith in order to become members. Candi Cushman with Focus on the Family says the ruling should be a wake-up call to every Christian student in a public university and high school.

"What this is really about is a conflict between Christian students upholding their rights to uphold [and publicly espouse] a sexual moral standard...and the public schools' attempts to basically enforce a politically correct view of homosexuality," she explains.

The ministry spokeswoman says it is good that the court's decision only affected one particular school. "One way we can fight back is to get more aggressive in exercising our free-speech rights, and then hopefully there will be other court precedents that will establish a more firm standard for religious freedom and freedom of speech," she suggests. "So people should not give up hope."

According to Cushman, the subject policy at Hastings is hostile toward true diversity and First Amendment rights.
